In 1947, Elia Kazan started the Actors Studio. He went on to work with many actors who trained there in the Stanislavsky system ("method acting"), including Marlon Brando, James Dean, Julie Harris, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden. His early films have garnered awards including two Oscars for Best Director; one in 1955 for On the Waterfront (1954), and the other in 1948 for Gentleman's Agreement (1947). Mr. Kazan fell out of favor among his peers after testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952.
