Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), born in Calcutta, India,
was the son of poet Sukumar Ray. He studied painting, and
earned a degree in economics. In addition to filmmaking, Mr.
Ray was a musician, a composer and also a writer. He
published the Bengali children's magazine
"Sandesh," which was founded by his
grandfather.
Mr. Ray directed the neorealist Apu trilogy. The second
film in that series, Aparajito (1956), won the Venice
Film Festival Golden Lion in 1957. In 1992, Satyajit Ray
received the honorary Academy Award for mastery of art in
motion pictures and humanitarian outlook.
