Mr. Ray directed the neorealist Apu trilogy. The second film in that series, Aparajito (1956), won the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion in 1957. Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), born in Calcutta, India,
was the son of poet Sukumar Ray. He studied painting, and
earned a degree in economics. In addition to filmmaking, Mr.
Ray was a musician, a composer and also a writer. He
published the Bengali children's magazine
"Sandesh," which was founded by his
grandfather.
