Alain Resnais (b. 1922) was born in Vannes,
France, and studied at I.D.H.E.C., the French film school.
He edits his own films as well as those of other directors.
His early reputation was built on his "art" films: Van
Gogh (1948), Gauguin (1950), and
Guernica (1950).
Mr. Resnais' film, Mon Oncle d'Amerique
(1980) was awarded the 1980 Cannes Grand Prix.
Last Year at Marienbad (1961) received the
1961 Venice Golden Lion. Mr. Resnais was also awarded the
1995 Golden Lion in celebration of the 100th anniversary of
motion pictures.
